
Sewing Medieval Braises+Chausses / Hosen
@ CLICK HERE TO REGISTER This workshop focuses on medieval underwear and stockings of 14th-century England commonly used by men and women. For men, braies are under pants and chausses are footed stockings, both of which are fastened to a cloth waistband. Women’s stockings are called hosen and are footed and worn just below the knee, held by garters. We will explore their construction, the type of fabric used, and we will draft patterns which we will then use to sew these items for ourselves. The fabric requirement is wool flannel or linen, 60” wide. You will need to source your own fabric for this project in a solid color of your choice, keeping in mind the medieval colors available at this place and time. In many medieval illustrations, women often have red hosen. Garters are often made of leather, twill tape or tablet woven lengths. Braies are usually made from white linen.
